This chapter has really showed me that medical
social workers have a lot of responsibilities when it comes to helping people
in the medical field. I had no idea that medical social workers made certain
decisions in the field that can either help someone or hurt someone. The main
thing that can help and hurt someone is medical insurance. It is the medical
social worker job to decide who will get the organ or not. They base this decision
on their insurance, if they do not have good insurance then the medical social
worker will have to deny them the organ and give it to someone who can “afford”
it. This would have to be just a difficult thing to do. Medical social workers
also get to decide who will get to go home.
They call this process the discharge planning. Social workers need to
make sure that the patient’s house is safe for the patient to go back to. Being
a medical social worker is a lot harder than I thought. A medical social worker
has to make sure that they do not cross boundaries and make sure they separate work
and their personal life. Medical social workers also have to make sure that
when it comes to working with the patient they stick with the patient’s
beliefs, sexual orientation, religion, gender, age and so forth. This will make
sure that they understand the patient as much as possible and it will help them
help the patient and I believe it will go a lot smoother. They do so much for
the hospital and it amazes me how some hospitals do not even want a medical
social worker there.

This chapter also showed me how much responsibility a social worker has in the hospital when it comes to helping people. Hospital social work is very important and requires much knowledge and training. The book discusses that there are certain values and ethical considerations when it comes to social work in the hospital. There are important decisions that need to be made about who gets what services and it is a very hard decision for a social worker to have to make.
ReplyDeleteThis chapter showed me as well the importance in a social worker and the duties they perform. I feel like it is such a hard decision on deciding who gets an organ or not and I know this is a lot of pressure on the social worker. It is hard to save one person's life and not another, especially when your job focuses on saving and helping lives. Through out the chapter it discusses the different ethical issues as well. A patient's rights and beliefs should be the number one factor while performing a duty.
