Chapter five talks about social work in the home
care setting. “The home was the original location of most health care, which
was provided b family, friends, and neighbors with the support and supervision
of a physician who visited occasionally” (Fort Cowles, 2003, p. 159). Home care
is something that is growing into a “must” now days and it is something that is
not cheap. Medicare covers some of the cost but not all of it. Social workers
play a major role in home health care because they are the ones that gather information
and also gather resources to make sure the client has all the information that
they need in order to make home health care as comfortable as possible. The chapter
also talks about vulnerable population and how social workers can help get the
voice out to people who live in those situations. Vulnerable population is
where race, low income, homelessness and uninsured citizens don’t really have a
say when it comes to something important. Social workers can go into the
community and help the citizens get their voice out to the “higher up”
citizens. I believe that this is something very important for a social worker
to talk part in because it will show the community that you care and will also
show that the social worker is there to help whomever is in need. Community
plays a major role in the social worker field. It can help a social worker in
more ways than one. If you are aware of your surrounding community or the
community that your client resides in, then it will help the client understand what
they are going through and will help you help your client.
