Chapter One: Orentation to social work in the health care field

Chapter one discusses the history of the social work profession in the health care field and also talks about important theories. Social work started in 1905 and has been booming ever since. I really never knew that social workers work in hospitals. I always thought they just went to the person’s house that they had a call on. I always have had respect for social workers but now reading all of this has made me have a new found respect for them. I also learned a lot about the different types of theories. You have four major theories that are talked about. They are system’s theories, psychodynamic, social learning and conflict. All are very interesting and play a major role in the social work field. Another thing that really caught my eye was that a lot of people were talking about P.I.E. I have never heard of it so I read more about it and it amazed me. It is a very good tool for social workers to make more sense of the domain of a problem. This chapter introduced me to a whole new aspect when it comes to social work. It really makes me interested to learn a lot more about the profession. To help me learn more about it I read this very interesting article. It is called, “Graduate students perception of professional power in social work practice”. It mainly talks about being in the social work field and how you need to have “power” to conquer it and take it on the best you can. It opened up my eye in a good way!
